Game objective

The goal of 2048 is to combine numbered tiles on a grid until you create a tile with the value 2048. Each move slides all tiles in one direction. When two tiles with the same number collide, they merge into a single tile with double the value.

After every move, a new tile appears in a random empty cell — usually a 2 (90% chance) or a 4 (10% chance). The game ends when the board is full and no adjacent tiles can merge. There is no timer, so you can plan each move carefully.

Choose from 3×3, 4×4, 5×5, or 6×6 grids. The classic 4×4 board is the standard experience and the best place to learn. A 3×3 board is compact and challenging, while 5×5 and 6×6 boards offer more space for longer games and higher tiles.

The win condition is always reaching the 2048 tile, regardless of board size. Best scores are saved independently per size, so you can master each grid at your own pace.

The corner strategy

Pick one corner of the board — most players choose bottom-left or bottom-right — and commit to keeping your highest tile there. Every move should work toward maintaining and growing that corner tile. This prevents your largest values from getting trapped in the middle of the board where they are hard to merge.

The corner works because it reduces directions that can displace your top tile. With your anchor set, merges become predictable and you spend less time rescuing scattered high values.

Build along the edges

Arrange tiles in descending order along the edge leading to your corner. For example, if your highest tile is in the bottom-right corner, build a chain like 256, 128, 64, 32 along the bottom row and right column. This creates predictable merge opportunities and keeps the board organized.

When the edge chain is intact, every swipe toward the corner compresses tiles and opens space for new spawns in controlled areas instead of random hotspots.

Avoid random moves

Every move should have a purpose. Before swiping, ask yourself: does this move bring same-value tiles together, or does it scatter my progress? Upward swipes are often the most dangerous when using a bottom-corner strategy, as they can pull your highest tile away from its corner.

If no move improves your structure, choose the one that does the least damage. Sometimes delaying a merge is correct when it preserves your anchor chain.

When to use undo

Save your undo moves for critical mistakes — like accidentally breaking your corner chain or merging in the wrong direction. You earn extra undos at the 128, 256, and 512 milestones, so use early undos freely and conserve later ones for high-stakes moments near the endgame.

Undo reverts the entire board to the state before your last move. Use it to learn which swipes are safe and which ones collapse your setup.

Tips for different board sizes

On a 3×3 board, space is extremely limited — focus on one corner and avoid creating tiles you cannot merge quickly. On 4×4, the corner strategy works best and is the standard competitive format.

On 5×5 and 6×6 boards, you have more flexibility but also more tiles to manage. Stay disciplined and do not spread large values across the board. Extra space is only an advantage when you maintain edge order.

Endgame discipline

From 512 onward, one mistake can end the run. Prioritize board structure over greedy merges that open dangerous spawn cells on your anchor edge.

When you reach 1024, plan two or three moves ahead. Ask where the next 2 will spawn and whether it blocks your chain. Patient endgame play converts good boards into 2048 finishes.
